Hideaways in Hay: Brookfield House, Brook Street, Hay-on-Wye, Powys, Wales
It's only moments from this bibliophile's 'mecca' to your glorious Jacobean hideaway. This town house is off a quiet road in Hay and words hardly do it justice – an exquisite drawing room, Victorian-schoolhouse-turned-kitchen and perfumed boudoir. Owners Michael and Séza spent four years taking it back to its former glory; sourcing everything down to the decorative thunderboxes. The drawing room is the first of many grown-up spaces: embroidery-encrusted drapes, an inlaid desk and cream walls dotted with portraits. Across the hall there's a handsome dining room with lime-plastered walls, and oak steps leading into the brilliant kitchen. It's pure theatre. Deep green Victorian shop fittings, marble tops and cut-glass shades set the scene for a culinary performance on the raised 'stage'. Vast windows throw in the light, and nearby is a handy laundry room and loo. En suite bathrooms come with a round mosaic tub or surround-sound sauna. The Mistress's bedroom flaunts a curvaceous French wooden bed, delicate pink walls and lavender-scented sheets. On the top floor, the Master's is altogether more masculine: four-poster Indian marriage bed, cast iron bath and walk-in shower. Spend time in the library, walk by the Wye or into the Black Mountains. Literature, history and finery in equal doses.
